Good Riddance, Twinkie

In what hopefully is a sign of healthier times, Hostess Brands – the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, among many other things – has declared bankruptcy.

Just for grins, I tried to find some nutritional (or lack thereof) information on Twinkies, and came across a book, written by Steve Ettlinger, entitled Twinkie, Deconstructed: My Journey to Discover How the Ingredients Found in Processed Foods Are Grown, Mined (Yes, Mined), and Manipulated into What America Eats

Turns out, the Twinkie is made from 39 ingredients that add up to 150 calories and 18 grams of sugar.  And that’s before you go the State Fair route and deep fry it!

With childhood obesity at record highs and only projected to get worse, it might not be the worst thing in the world for super-sugary and carb-heavy products pretty much aimed at kids to go the way of the dinosaur.

Considering there is still value in the brands, I’m sure some company will purchase Hostess Brands at a deep discount, which means Twinkies will be back in no time.  Boo!

On a funny note, for those of you who are fans of Zombieland, you already knew this was coming…

(Please don’t think I’m making light of the fact that 18,000 people are now out of work.  That sucks, I’m sorry it’s happening, and I hope they are able to find other employment soon!)
