Petition to Get Whole Foods to Recognize Paleo as Healthy

Eating healthy is more than just fresh vegetables and low fat!

Today’s post is going to be short and sweet – I typically read Mark’s Daily Apple on Sunday (weekend link love, which we’ve received twice!) to get ideas for posts for the upcoming week.

This weekend, Mark posted a link to a petition posted on the Healthy Paleo Coalition website which urges Whole Foods to revise its Health Starts Here program from a more vegetarian/vegen-centric diet to a Paleo-centric diet.

Here is some text explaining the petition:

Our mission isn’t to persuade WFM to forego their existing program, but rather to expand it to include additional dietary principles that may work better for individual customer needs. It’s clear that low fat and/or vegan diets have not only not worked well for many, they have in many cases damaged health. All in all, we feel that the current Health Starts Here program overlooks the enormous amount of biochemical and physiological diversity among individuals.

In addition, there is a growing concern over the issues surrounding grain agriculture. Not only have grains become seriously problematic for the health of many individuals, there are also massive environmental concerns surrounding grain agriculture that most are totally unaware of. This is something that few understand, however, many in the Paleo community are knowledgeable about due to personal and professional experience.

One thing is abundantly clear. We all have the same fundamental concerns about health and the environment. By including Paleo lifestyle recommendations into the Health Starts Here program, we feel that WFM will be much better equipped to educate the individual by giving them choices directly related to their concerns and thereby creating awareness and helping an increasing number of stakeholders make better lifestyle decisions that they can sustain.

While I’m not convinced this petition will do much other than potentially raise awareness, if you follow the Paleo diet it’s probably worth it to add your name to the list.  I know I did.

Raising awareness is what this is all about! Thanks for signing the petition. Hopefully we will be able to get WFM to become more AWARE of the great benefits of the Paleo lifestyle and someday rethink their rigid position on what healthy eating looks like.

I wasn’t trying to knock the petition, and I certainly do hope that WH eventually revises their idea of healthy eating.
